Do you holiday in Madeira on a regular basis?

We are looking for people who have holidayed in Madeira on a regular basis.

We want to know the following:

How many years have you been visiting?

Where do you stay?

Will you eventually buy and retire to Madeira?

What changes to the island have you seen over the visits you have made to the island?

What do you think about the building works and increase in apartments and hotels in Funchal?

Has the building work affected your holiday?

And,what is your opinion over the future of the island?

Please either email me or post your thoughts here, for a new feature coming in the new year for the online e-paper

Re: Do you holiday in Madeira on a regular basis?

My husband and I have visited Madeira on numerous occasions since 1989. Generally (before its demise) staying at Madeir Palaccio but now renting one of the best flats in Madeira just by the restaurant Moby Dick. We generally try and make it once a year, sometimes twide occasionally having to miss a year. Don' like Easyjet and now wondering whether we are too old to travel. Don't like the timeshare salespeople, think they should be stopped, don't like all the newbuilding, there are now too many hotels in Madeira and the whole plade will soon be spoilt. Liked it when a walk into the town from the pALAC CIO was mainly via banana fields. Think we have seen the best but still visiting, came last December and coming back in two weeks time

We have just come back from Madeira and enjoyed it very much but were holidaying & house hunting at the same time we were there 5 weeks and loved every minute of it. It is true what the other lady said they will spoil it by building too many new buildings otherwise we can see it becoming another Spain which would be a shame, but we will be back to see Christmas and the New Year. We find Easy Jet very good and reasonable we had a flight from Bristol £19-99 each that can't be bad.

Re: Do you holiday in Madeira on a regular basis?

My wife and I have been coming to the Madeira for 15 years. Mostly we stay at the Monumental Lido Hotel. Just about to retire now, but while we may well visit more than once or twice a year in the future, don't think we will buy property (although have thought about it). One reason we return each year is to see how things have changed by the year with the new buildings. Sadly miss walking into town past the settlements with the banana crops. We think development has gone a little too far now. We remember the old road from the airport, while it took longer it was so much more relaxing. Now with traffic and development Madeira has lost the charm it had and has moved into the commercial world, pity for those old style visitors.

Re: Do you holiday in Madeira on a regular basis?

Thank you David for your comments as it is interesting to hear views of change from people who have regularly visited Madeira over the last decade or so. Do you have some pictures of your holidays past and present? It would be interesting to post some on the Blog on this site so that others can appreciate the changes of how Madeira used to be to how it is now.
