Buying furniture

I am buying a house in Ponta do Sol and wondered which are the best value for money furniture stores in the area. Also, will they deliver?

Re: Buying furniture

Hi Elaine

There are loads of places to buy furniture, try Moviflor in Funchal near the Wine Institute or Hipermoveis in Canico on the old road - all delivers should be free depending on quantities i.e. if its only 50 euros then its the back of the car or shankshees pony. But if your into modern furniture contact Ikea in lisbon and see if they will deliver and at what cost.

Good luck

Re: Buying furniture

Hello Elaine

When I arrived here I bought most of my furniture from the Hipermoveis Store in Ribeira Brava and electricals from Modelo and Sa. For build your self furniture, Max Mat at Madeira Shopping sells various items although not to the same selection that one would get if you were buying at B&Q back home!

Also there is an Auction room in Funchal which is situated by Moviflors(another shop, that Alistair mentioned and also where I bought my beds from).

Funchal has a selection of furniture shops in the area near the se cathedral and I picked up a very reasonably priced pine dresser from one a few years ago.

Happy hunting and good luck

Re: Buying furniture

With hindsight we wished we bought in the UK and shipped.Although we spent a great deal on furniture in Funchal the quality is not good nor the aftersales help. We found that First Choice Airways have an affliated freight company who will airfreight for approx £1 per kilo with a minimum of 100 kilos. With charges such as customs etc it worked out to about £150 for 100 kilos and was magic for items not available in Madeira or silly prices.

Hi Lyn

Thanks for your post, that's very interesting and also very cheap. Can you enlighten us on how one goes about booking and using that company as it is very expensive buying stuff on the island.

Your imput will be much apreciated.

Re: Buying furniture

Hello

I was interested to read lyn's comment on wishing to have bought in UK the things which were silly prices in Madeira. Could you please give me some idea of what these sorts of things were. We are actually shipping the furniture from here.
