In June we will go for two weeks and we will visit the Atlantic festival and watch two nights of the fireworks competition. In 2010 we have been at New Year's Eve. Watch this video that I have made on the roof of our hotel (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8uKbD-jpgeE).
Hi Everyone,
No, we will not be seeing the fireworks this year. We have seen them twice, but now the air fares are so expensive to come home during the first week of the year, we think it is a rip-off. Easyjet are reasonable going out, but more than twice as much to return home. They know there is no alternative. We are going on Christmas Eve and flying back here on New Years Eve.
Our timeshare runs from 29th October to 12th November. Nice photograph of our timeshare on todays Picture of the Day. Yesterdays was very old. Still, better than nothing. We like to see them everyday.
Hi everyone,
we also admit it we have family and friends with glazed eyes. We will be over for our 2 weeks for the 15th year at the end of November.

Lucky you Terry going back in November AND Christmas. Will you be there for the fireworks on Dec 31st?
We'll be dropping into Funchal briefly on Aug 21st as we'll be on the Marco Polo cruising Portugal, Azores & Madeira.
In answer to your question Terry, yes my friends eyes do glaze over when I mention Madeira.! You can see what they are thinking..oh not Madeira again! LOL!

Hi Everyone,
Yes, we admit to being Madeiraholics. We can answer 'YES' to every point.
How about asking " Do your family and friends eyes glaze over at the mention of MADEIRA?
We have got our 14th and 15th visits booked up for November (2 weeks) and then Christmas. Can't wait. Would be nice to meet some of you.
Hi Maurice. Yes I am raising my hand to say that I am definitely a "MADEIRAHOLIC"! I read the local news everyday, check the webcams and keep in touch with my Portuguese friends every week!
Sorry, made a mistake, the 10th time.
Sorry, made a mistake, the 10th time.
So yes, we are a Madeiraholic too! In June we will go for the 8th time to Madeira and we daily check the daily web cams. We will watch our country facing Portugal at the Euro 2012 there. Cheers from the Netherlands.
If you go to youtube.com and search for 'festa da flor 2012' there are already lots of film clips to give you an idea of what it was like. The funny thing is that we bought a DVD of the event and we are in it!!!! As the camera pans the carpet of flowers on the Avenida Ariaga I spotted my missus, Shelagh and a quick glimpse of myself!
By the way, congratulations to everyone in Madeira who contributed to the wonderful Festa da Flor this year. It was a fantastic four days and I would never have believed that a small island could have 312 vintage cars in such superb condition to display on Saturday on the Estrada Monumental.
I know it won't be easy to get evryone together at the same time & place for a full meeting but through the auspices of this site you can come out into the open and admit it!!!!
Had 11 wonderful days in Madeira and the best Festa da Flor in a long time. Whilst there we met Christine and John for the inaugural meeting of - MADEIRAHOLICS. If you say yes to two or more of:
1. visit Madeira regularly
2. read and/or post comments here
3. check the StrawberryWorld web cams frequently
4. check the netmadeira.com web cams frequently
5. check the noticias
6. visit any other madeira related websites
Then you are a MADEIRAHOLIC. Now we know that Derek Whitaker, Terry Cook, Karen Rodrigues, Margaret and all the others are mingling with normal human beings and trying to appear normal but we know that you are all MADEIRAHOLICS. The time has come to raise you hand and admit it!!!
Hello everyone, here we are in Madeira. We went to meet Maurice and his wife Shelagh on Wedensday. It was rather strange looking for someone who you did not know their face. We got along just as if we were old friends and we enjoyed their company so much that we returned to see them beofre they left for home yesterday. The weather is dry and quite sunny but there is a strong sea breeze.
Hello everyone, Does anyone know why the TRANSLATE facility has been removed from the Diario Da Noticias Madeira web page. I used it to practice my Portuguese with it but now there is no help with the words you don't know. The individual word translation has disappeared along with the whole page/article translation facility. I think I will have to visit the office in Funchal to enquire as to why they have removed it unless someone knows the answer. I wish everyone a good holiday in Madeira this year (boas ferias e boa viagem)
Hi all, end of the week at last so I am off home to start packing. Gotta be at Gatwick around 4am on Tues for the TAP flight to Funchal. Gloat gloat gloat.
Hi Christine, we stay at the HOTEL APARTAMENTO DA SÉ which is just behind the Cathedral on Rua da Sabao(soap street). We tend to avoid the Lido area now as it's full of Tourists LOL. We are often found in the Bar O Avo on Rua da Alfandega opposite the ferry office.
If we do get up by the Monumental Lido I'll pop into the StrawberryWorld office and have a chat about the webcam.
Hello Maurice, It looks like you are going to have to take a cloth and some windolene to clean the webcams! Unfortunately no response as yet from John at Strawberry World.
Hello Maurice, With our timeshare weeks sometimes we see the Flower Festival and sometimes not. Last year we didn't manage to get a good spot to watch it and as I am under 5ft tall I couldn't see a thing. We decided to go to the Red Bar on the Promenade above the Marina for a drink only to find they had a large screen showing the TV coverage and we could have seen it all. Not the same I know but better than nothing. We will be staying at the Pestana Palms down by the Lido and should you like to meet for a coffee (or Other) perhaps the 25th (Wednesday) would be OK. We often go to the Number Two Pub (opposite the Pestana Carlton) for a late lunch snack and as it is a Bank Holiday that day we will most likely be there. We often sit inside now as the veranda is usually full of "smokers" which is no good for my asthma. Not set in stone if you would like to meet, but elsewhere. Have a good holiday.
The sun is coming out now! It must have heard me LOL.
Hi Chistine, you are going to miss most of the flower festival. My Missus and I are going out on the 17th and coming back on the 27th. I hope the weather picks up it looks very gloomy at the moment.
Hello everyone, I have sent an e-mail to John at Strawberry World re the webcams and Daily Pic and asked him to put a message here to let us know when the webcam upgrading will be completed and the daily pic restored. I was told last September whilst in Madeira that it would be finished by the end of the year! We go to Madeira on the 23rd April, so if we haven't heard anything by then. I will try to find something out whilst we are there.
Hi everyone. Seems that Strawberry World is having a few technical problems. The Daily Pic will not appear at the moment. Hope everyone is ok.
I thought Terry was going to do it, Maurice! Christine Callaghan
I have emailed Stawberryworld and have asked if they could clean the web-cam lens cover and restore the of daily pics. Fingers crossed.
Yes Maurice I have noticed the Daily Pic has not been updated.
Hmm, nobody updating the 'Daily Pic' on Strawberry World.
Hi Terry, glad you tried the round trip to Porto Moniz. As you say, it's a long day but the bus does stop for coffee/ciggy breaks at least! Very civilised. Looking forward to doing the trip again in April after the Flower Festival is over.
Hi everyone,
We are in Madeira at the moment. Following a post on this site concerning bus trip to Porto Moniz, we went yesterday. Three hour trip there, four hour stop, then 4 hour return trip. Very long day, but worth it.( 12 hour day) Weather here is quite warm, and no sign of any rain. Very dry everywhere.
Hi everyone. Yes the webcams on Strawberry World are in a mess. Today the webcam for the Cathedral is out of focus along with some of the others. Hope everyone is OK.
Hi Christine, with regard to web-cam upgrade, it does say on the site - "...PLEASE NOTE...
NEW FIBRE-OPTIC SYSTEM BEING INSTALLED IN FUNCHAL
WHICH MAY AFFECT THE WEBCAM" So, maybe once that is done they'll be able to update the camera setup.
Hi Christine, Maurice & Derek,
We will be flying to Madeira on Friday so I expect the weather will change then.
We have always been lucky with the weather on the many times we have been there so our luck must run out soon. We will be staying in town this time for a change, usually we are up by the Lido.
We will be taking a cloth to clean the lenses on the cameras! Keep your eyes open in case you see someone climbing up the pole.
Hello again, Sorry, I forgot to say I had not heard about the drought problem. Christine.
Hello everyone, If you check out previous page 8 of 15-9-2011 you will note that I had visited the Strawberry World Office in Funchal and been informed that they were working to improve the webcam pictures which would be in High Definition by the end of the year. WELL, after checking out today's offerings, I am sure you will all agree that they have failed miserably!
Has anyone just been or going soon to Madeira? We don't seem to have had much news lately. Christine
Hi Maurice. I will say a prayer for you so that the weather is good. Yes I saw that as well about the lack of rain.
I've just read that the south coast of Madeira is in a drought with less that 10% of normall rainfall. I just hope that this doesn't change in April when I'm there for 12 days :( LOL
Hello everyone, Well said Maurice, I could not agree more. Although it is a very difficult language to learn it is well worth the effort it takes. I have been "learning" for many , many years now and started at nightschool and we had to fight to extend the normal couple of years given to French, Spanish classes etc as it does take much longer to learn. I have been told on many occasions that the 2 hours per week and the short term times make it impossible to progress very far or quickly. We have not had any Portuguese Classes in our area for years now and our teacher who we all kept in touch with after she retired has unfortunately just passed away and I will miss her terribly not only for being the wonderful lady she was but for always still being happy to help if I rang her because I was stuck with how to say something or did not understand any of the many complicated grammatical rules which seem to only apply to the Portuguese Language. MY ADVICE TO ANYONE, AS FROM MAURICE, IS TO GIVE IT A TRY, YOU WON'T REGRET IT AND YOUR HOLIDAYS WILL BE EVEN MORE ENJOYABLE FOR DOING IT. Christine.
Hi Sylvia, if I were you I'd avoid fellow Brits and mix with the locals more. They are lovely people. You'll learn Portuguese more quickly and there are always things going on in the Madeiran community. You'll also be accepted more by them if you make a concerted effort to learn Portuguese, well the local variant anyway, and join in local events. I know it may seem a bit scarey at first but you'll soon realise the benefits. Hope you enjoy living there. I we had a few more bob then we'd consider moving there too despite the so-called fragility of the Portuguese economy.
One volunteer armed with a bottle of Windowlene & a cloth required to climb up the Marina Shopping centre. Your task......clean the front of the web cam ROFLMAO.
Hi Christine. Yes I have noticed the cathedral has moved again and also a couple of the cams on the front of Funchal Bay are dirty.
Has anyone noticed that some of the webcam views are on the move again? Christine Callaghan.
Hello Sylvia (and everyone)
I would suggest you go to the English Church on Sunday morning where they have a coffee/wine gathering after the Service. I believe the Service is around 10am - 10.30am. I am sure you will get to know lots of information there from the various people who attend.
Also there is the MADS (Madeira Amateur Dramatics Society) who I know put on at least one musical/show per year as we usually just miss it when we arrive at the end of April. Friends of our have seen many of their productions and give them glowing reports. I would imaging that they would now be rehearsing for the next show. The only contact/name I know for the MADS is Paul Roberts who works for Pestana and I believe he is based at The Village/Miramar. Maybe someone who attends the English Church would also be able to give you more information on the MADS. I hope this helps.
Best wishes to all. Christine Callaghan
Hi I have just moved to Funchal from Wales and would like to meet up with people or an organisation maybe a choir or a tennis club, I also enjoy dancing is there anywhere I could go for dancing of any sort. This a good way of meeting people and as my portugese language is not good but hopeing to pick it up in time. Hope that somebody out there can advise me on the above.
Thank you
Sylvia
Hi admin, isn't it about time the holly & seasons greetings were taken down? It's supposed to bring bad luck if you leave the deccies up past 12th night!!! LOL
Hi I have just moved to funchal and would like to start work part or full time in a bar/ restaurant /cafe bar . I have all round experience in the restaurant business as I use to have my own Mediterranean Bar /Restaurant in Cardiff Wales for 10 years and very much a hands on from the kitchen to front of house. If there´s anybody out there that can help I would be very grateful.

Happy New Year to you all, especially those lucky enough to spend it in Funchal.
I really enjoy reading all your comments about your Holidays it makes me really jealous as we only manage to get back to Madeira every 3 years or so.
All the best for 2012
Hello everyone, I've just checked out the webcam pictures and I see that they are now back to their correct positions. Does anyone know why the direction of many of the camera angles always seem to be changed at New Year? Sixteen weeks today and counting and we will be in beautiful Madeira. Christine.
Happy new year everyone
HAPPY NEW YEAR TO EVERYONE. Can anyone tell me what happens to most of the webcam pictures EVERY NEW YEAR'S EVE, PLEASE? Most of them always seem to point in a different direction. Love, Good Health and Prosperity to all. Christine xx
I've been wondering where you were Derek! A HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL and wishing everyone wonderful holidays in Madeira. (Thank you for all your kind thoughts and condolences.) Christine

The year before last we were booked to go to Madeira for Christmas/new year but EasyJet wouldn't fly due to the bad weather in Madeira and we lost our holiday. Last year and this year we didn't bother booking for Christmas but are going in April for the flower festival. We have been for quite a few Christmas/New Years in the past but might try again in a year or two.
Hi Maurice,
Just deciding when to go to Madeira next. We were hoping to go at Christmas, as we did last year, but the fares are so expensive this year. Cant believe how much they have gone up. Will probably go February or March.
Where is everybody?
Seems the strike is affecting the mainland airports of Porto & Lisbon but Funchal is open.
Thanks for the info Terry. I also see something going on at the pier on the web cam.
Something seems to have appeared on the old pier next to the marina that looks like it's part of the lights.
Hi Margaret,
Thanks for the info, we had already seen it in the Jornal da Madeira. They started putting the lights up around the Cathedral on Saturday. It is a new company doing them this year.
Hi Terry & Maurice. regarding the Christmas lights I get regular emails from www.visitmadeira.pt and the last email this month gives 8th December as the starting date for the lights in Funchal. We have been going to Madeira for years at beg. of December for 2 weeks and there have always been some lights on. Perhaps they are delaying them to save money this year.
So sorry Christine
Hi Terry, I see what you mean about the Xmas lights. Looking at the webcams on the sea front there doesn't seem to be any lights going up. Most unusual.
Sorry for your loss Christine. Do keep in touch.
Sorry Christine.
Sorry Christine.
So sorry Christine. Best Wishes.
Hello everyone, I am sorry I have not contributed lately. Whilst we were in Madeira in September my stepson had a Stem Cell (Bone Marrow) Transplant. Kevin had insisted we still go on holiday as he would be in isolation and we would not be allowed to visit him. At the time when his transplant was taking place our friends Senhor Tony and Senhora Graca who own O Chef and O Chefe Steak House Restaurants, they took us to the their Church, O Colegio in the Municipal Square in Funchal. It is such a most beautiful church and I would recommend for everyone to visit. The Mass was very moving for us as Senhora Graca (unknown to us) had given Kevin's name to the Priest in order to be included in the Prayers for the Sick. It was so kind of them to take us to the Church and they offered as soon as they knew what was happening and they are such a kind and lovely couple. The Transplant all went well and eventually we received the news we were waiting for that Kevin was in recovery, although extremely slowly and last week he rang to say we would be able to visit very soon. Unfortunately Kevin suddenly contracted an infection which very quickly affected his vital organs. We were called to go to the hospital (we live a considerable distance away) and he died shortly after we arrived. I realise that this is not really about Madeira but I felt by the comments I have just read that some of you were wondering what had happened to me. I will check out the site again when time and feelings/emotions allow.
Very worried about Christine, as Maurice says, its very quiet.
Just returned from our two weeks stay in Funchal. Usually at this time of year we watch the Christmas Lights being put up (no Health & Safety!). Nothing at all this year, just a few on trees outside the Marina Shopping Centre, no displays in town or on the Pier. There are usually a lot on trees up the Estrada Monumental, but nothing so far. Does anyone know whats happening? Nobody we spoke to knew anything.
The new Promenade is very nice, and will be even better if they can get the shops opened.
It is very quiet on here just recently.
Still no word from Christine. Any news of her ?
Maurice, the links aren't working yet as the information and text is being worked on at the mo, which is why they are in a different colour. Had planned on them going 'live' sooner, but been a little busy with other things, but will be on line soon.
Our three weeks in Madeira Sept/Oct. had the best weather ever. The new road leading to the port is very good, unfortunately opened two hours after we left, but we managed to walk along many times whilst there They worked night and day to complete. Lovely views. Only once stopped by timeshare, sellin g weeks at Regency. Pleasant Englishman who used to work at Savoy and is not happy with how the staff there were treated. This time the lady in the tourist office
was very helpful, unlike in the past when they didn`t seem to understand why we would want information in English. Lots of shops seem to have closed, but not so many as here in our home town. Onlyu 11 1/2 months to goto be back there. We hope to find a reasonable apartment let so we can go back mid year.
The links just above here are not all working. Gardens of Madeira and Treasure Hunt - update don't seem to work.
No word from Christine? I wonder if she's back yet?
Hiccups LOL
Sorry don't know what happened there!!!!!!!!!!!
Hi Maurice, hope you have a nice holiday, even though it is next year!

Woo Hoo!! Got flights booked and horel booked. Sadly not until April next year but at least this time we should be there for the flower festival.
